Steppe lake

Nature at its best, as far as the eye can see: wide plains, gentle rolling hills covered with vineyards and the largest steppe lake in Central Europe. Neusiedl am See lies at the heart of this unique natural landscape.

Lake Neusiedler See is the most westerly of the European steppe lakes and also the largest lake in Austria. It is almost completely surrounded by a 178 km²-belt of reed beds, the second-largest reed plantation in Europe. At the same time, it is home to many rare animals and hundreds of bird species. The entire area of the lake including the reed belt is today around 320 km², of which about 4/5 is on Austrian soil and 1/5 in Hungary.

When you look out over the lake you could be forgiven for thinking that the sky and water meet in the distance. The reason for this is the curvature of the earth, 9.6 m between Neusiedl am See and Mörbisch. This is why you can’t see from one end to the other. The lake is hardly ever deeper than 180 cm, the water warms up in the summer months to a temperature of 30 degrees – a swimming pool experience in natural surroundings!

The cultural landscape of the Neusiedl See lake region has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001 (the site crosses the border into Hungary).
