A town with a history – a town that is much visited
If you look back you will see that Neusiedl am See was always a rustic town both culturally and in structure. The topographical features between the Parndorf plate and lake shore have meant that the original small village with its different buildings would become a classic ribbon development. All the historic and public buildings are along the main street. Some buildings are well preserved and the dwellings beautifully kept, there is a good choice of schools, lovely countryside and excellent
transport links to Vienna, to the provincial capital of Eisenstadt and to Bratislava (in Slovakia) – these are the features that make Neusiedl am See a great place to live, work in or visit for your holiday.
The Tabor ruin – residential castle or defence tower
The Tabor ruin is a local landmark. Up till a short while ago it was thought that the tower was a Roman edifice but we now know that it is mediaeval (13th – 14th century) and was probably a defence tower or fortified royal residence - the experts are not sure at present. The view out over the town and the lake is unique and the sunsets especially enjoyable.
Tip: Petanque (boules) playing area
The hill on the north shore – the Kalvarienberg The Neusiedl Kalvarienberg with its botanical treasures is a gem, and the views out over the lake and resort are breathtaking. And as for grass cutting, there isn’t a gardener in sight – just a flock of Bohemian Forest sheep! The neo-Gothic Way of the Cross has a few unique features at the end. In contrast to the first eleven Stations of the Cross (wayside shrines) the twelfth is a three-dimensional sculpture of the crucifixion
group made from sandstone. It is also different in that the last two Stations are in the chapel at the rear. In the park at the foot of the Kalvarienberg there is the newly renovated statue of St. James, thanks to which the area is now part of the international Way of St. James.
The parish church of the town is dedicated to St. Nicholas and St. Gallus
The original Gothic church was reconstructed in Baroque style in 1633.
After the tower collapsed in 1937 the church got its onion tower.
Especially noteworthy are the 18th c fisherman’s chancel and high altarpiece with an early town view.
The Evangelical church, the Vater Unser (“Our Father”), built in 1987, is on Seestrasse.
